Starts with the Coach. Sanderson has PSU at a Gable level..maybe
even surpassing it (though obviously not in historical success yet).
The Iowas, Okie Sts and some others are not that far off though, but Sanderson/PSU is just a factory right now. They get talent, and that is certainly a thing, but these Lion kids are getting some serious training. You just see it in how they wrestle. All of them are taught to go for bonus points and how to do it. Much of that is that they are incredible on top, getting other wrestlers on their backeven the other great wrestlers.
One Lion that was the epitome of this in recent years, and toward the start of this run, was Zain Retherford at 149lb. Watching him wrestle in the Championships for several years was just amazing. He basically schooled every wrestler in every round including the final.taking very one of them to near fall points, if not outright pinning them.
Obviously, PSU wins cause the get a lot of their wrestlers to the tourney, and do a lot of winning, but the reason the are dominate is the bonus points. I'd say their score is probably about 30-40% bonus.
So, I think the only way to beat PSU is to join them and get these kids trained up better. SERTC is definitely a great thing for our program, and we will continue to reap benefits. I think to reach a higher level we need to bring in more coaches with the right background to bring some additional skills.
edit: And yeah, money is important but one has to use it the right way too.
